Essentially, they're clamps that are critical to how well the disc brake system in your vehicle works. They rub against brake rotors, using brake pads a contact surface to generate friction -- the resistance that the vehicle needs to slow down and come to a stop.

Signs They're Going Bad

No brake caliper is permanent. Any can go bad from use over its lifetime. When that starts happening, look for brake and ABS warning lights on the dash and buildup and corrosion around their seals. Keep an eye out for leaking brake fluid, too, either in the wheel area, the engine compartment, or both. You may also have brake pressure issues, start to pull sideways when you brake, or hear squealing and/or continuous grinding. Experience any of these, and you should inspect the calipers, replacing any that the results require. When ordering new ones, be sure to get the genuine article.
