Brake Pads
Brake pads are the textured plates mounted on top of the brake calipers in your vehicle's disc brake system. They produce friction by contacting the brake rotors. This resistance is what slows the vehicle's wheels and stops its tires.
There are four types, generally: organic, metallic/semi-metallic, ceramic, and carbon-fiber. None of them are permanent; they all fail eventually, often from no more than a lifetime of use. Where and how you drive determines when to replace them. Most often, though, you take care of it every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. You can also do it when you see certain signs -- damaged or worn pad surfaces, for instance, or warped rotors, dashboard warning lights, whining and grinding noises, and vibrations during braking. You may also notice that slowing down and stopping is taking a lot longer than usual.
If you see any of these symptoms, inspect the brake pads and change any problematic ones that the inspection's results point out. When you order them, be sure to get the genuine article.
