There are two types of automotive brake systems in use these days. Those are drum brake systems or disc brake systems. They have some parts in common, such as master brake cylinders, brake piston(s), brake lines, and brake hoses. Where they differ is in the components used to slow and stop your wheels.

The Difference in the Two Brake Systems

Drum brake systems have a brake shoe and brake drum. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder sends brake fluid through the line and hoses. That forces the shoe to fasten to the drum and create the resistance that slows your vehicle. A disc brake system is more involved. It has brake calipers, brake pads, and brake rotors. The fluid causes the calipers to clamp the pads onto the rotors to generate that friction.

Unfortunately, even the best brakes can begin to go bad and wear out. When that happens, your safety is at risk. That's why you need to replace any faulty parts as soon as you can.

How to Spot Bad Brakes

Signs of failure include:

• Bouncing or vibrating brake pedal
• Your vehicle pulls to one side when you're braking
• The brake pedal feels unusually soft or squishy
• You hear grinding, squealing, or squeaking noises
• Your dash warning light comes on
