How an Exhaust System Works

The pollutants first pass through a catalytic converter., which contains any toxic molecules and separates them into oxygen and nitrogen. The nitrogen remains trapped while the oxygen is allowed to continue. This process burns carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, leaving what amounts to nothing more than water vapors and carbon dioxide.

Then the exhaust manifold gathers the gases and directs them to the exhaust pipe while the resonator and muffler boost airflow and reduce engine noise. Finally, the tail pipe emits the cleaned fumes into the air.

How to Spot a Bad Exhaust System

Eventually, though, even the best exhaust system can start to go bad. Fortunately, the signs of that failure are easy to spot. They include:

• Reduced fuel efficiency
• Strange sounds from your exhaust pipe or muffler
• The smell of rotten eggs is present
• The "Check Engine" dash light comes on
