Spark Plugs
Your GM vehicle doesn't start without ignition. That only happens thanks to your spark plugs, which ignite the mixture of oxygen and fuel inside the combustion chamber in a process that's known as spark ignition.
How Spark Plugs Work
It all begins when you turn your key in the ignition lock cylinder or press the "Start" button. That leads to the ignition switch activating and your car battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil teaming to create a small electric charge. The spark plugs capture that charge in their leads to kindle combustion. Once that happens, the pistons pump, the crankshaft turns, and you're ready to go.
How to Recognize Spark Plug Issues
Eventually, your spark plugs may become too corroded to work right, or the gap between the leads may have widened too far to produce an effective spark. When that happens, you'll need to replace yours as soon as possible to keep your engine running right. Signs of trouble include:
- Engine misfires
- Uneven engine idles
- Difficulty starting your vehicle
- The "Check Engine" dashboard light comes on
You Can Trust Genuine GM Spark Plugs
Since these are similar symptoms to alternator issues, you'll want to carefully examine your entire charging system to determine the source of the problem. If your spark plugs need replacing, insist on using the best for your make and model. Those are the ones made by your manufacturer, since they're designed specifically to work with your vehicle and its engine.
